This a real life moat. Black swans live in these small huts that seem to float on top of the water.

Here's that swan I was tellin' you about...

This is a Japanese maple tree -- the leaves grow on top, near the sunlight. Autumn is pretty great in Chicago, but nothing compared to here.

We are about to hike up the ancient stairs to the castle. I wore the wrong shoes...

Crossing a bridge, a few salary men were posing for silly photos. You can't see them here, though. Sorry...

When Nolan told me we were going to a castle, I though it would have stone walls... like in Ireland...

This is Lake Biwa. Nagahama is at the very right in the picture, near the white building. This is the biggest body of water in Japan, besides the sea, which I still haven't seen, by the way.

Here, I am posing with a Tanuki, a Japanese symbol for fertility. The balls are huge. This one is especially creepy because of the blood dripping from its mouth.

It's really hard to get good photos sans tourists. I'm glad I got this one, even though you can see a sliver of my glove in the corner.

These crows are f-ing huge, ok? HUGE. They screamed some daunting tale the whole time.

This is the 400 year old garden that completes the 500 yen package deal. I'm glad it was raining; the umbrellas look sugei (Japanese teenager slang for cool).

This is one of my favorite photos.

Apparently thatched-roofed houses are very rare now in Japan. They are really gorgeous. When this picture was taken, a woman opened a sliding door & said, Kon'nichi wa.

Those damned crows again.

And again...

The antithesis of the earlier, more interesting swan.
